Desperation Film in Production Florida filmmaker, Michael Lister, has begun work on a short film based on one of his short stories.
The film, Another Quiet Night in Desperation, is being made in conjunction with Lister’s Summer
Youth Program, The Young Filmmaker’s Workshop and his production company, Pottersville Productions with Lister serving as writer/director. Another Florida filmmaker is also involved: Elam Stoltzfus of Live Oak Production Group will serve as the film’s producer and director of photography.
Casting complete, the film is now in pre-production with principal photography taking place by mid-July. Several local actors have been cast, including several from Lister’s theater company, The Pottersville Players.
The short film was adapted by Lister from one of a series of stories set in the small north Florida mill town of Desperation. The collection of stories will come out in early 2008 and include both the story and the film, Another Quiet Night in Desperation.
Here is an excerpt from the cover of the book:
For those unafraid of the dark . . . .
Comes a series of entertaining and thought-provoking stories as modern as MySpace and as timeless as revenge.
Welcome to Desperation, the small north Florida mill town that is purgatory to 3,636 doomed souls—less after tonight.
Beneath the billowing smoke that fills the sky and blocks out the sun, its inhabitants lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them. They are not all that unlike you and me, which is why we can’t look away—even when some small part of us wants to.
Another Quiet Night in Desperation is a powerful collection of literate, provocative tales of lost innocence, doomed romanticism, hard-edged cynicism, obsession, desperate desire, and shadowy sexuality—stories about adults for adults.
Enjoy your visit to our dark little town, your brief time among the damned. Unlike them, you can leave anytime you wish—you just won’t want to.
In these fictions of fate and futility, entropy and eroticism, acclaimed author Michael Lister takes readers on an exciting and twisting tour of the heartbreak of human frailty in a desperate town dangling on the edge of oblivion.
When the short film is completed in early August it will be submitted to several film festivals. There will also be screenings in Gulf, Bay, and Franklin Counties, and when the book is released it will include a DVD of the film.
